Guide to the 2017 Soulard Mardi Gras in St. Louis, MO

Mardi Gras may be a big deal in New Orleans, but St. Louis takes Fat Tuesday just as seriously. Soulard Mardi Gras has been a time honored tradition in the St. Louis area since the 1980s, starting out as a simple bar crawl, then turning into a major month-long event with corporate sponsors. Whether you're new to the area, or you simply want a refresher course, here's our guide to the 2017 Soulard Mardi Gras in St. Louis. 

What to Expect with the 2017 Soulard Mardi Gras

There are a variety of events throughout Soulard Mardi Gras that are fun for the whole family. There's also a great deal of fun for the 21-and-over crowd. You'll never run out of fun ideas for the 2017 Soulard Mardi Gras in St. Louis.

The festivities begin January 6 with the 12th Night Parade, which starts at 7:00 PM. The parade kicks off at Johnny's Restaurant & Bar on Russell Boulevard. On January 14 and 15, you can participate in the Snowman Softball Tournament, and have the chance to compete for the title against 90 different teams.

The Family Winter Carnival takes place on January 21 from noon to 4:00 PM at the Bud Light Party Centre in Soulard Market Park. This free and family-fun event will feature a variety of different activities like story time and a bounce house, as well as fun and interactive artwork provided by local artists.

The rest of the festival occurs throughout the month of February with the Wine, Beer, and Whiskey Taste on February 10. You'll be able to sample some tasty beverages from around the world while learning about the processes of making beer, whiskey, and wine. The Cajun Cook-Off, taking place on February 11, is your chance to learn about the techniques of crafting the perfect Cajun dish from local chefs. You'll even see them compete for the Cajun Crown.

There are two different events on February 18, the Missouri Lottery 5K Run for Your Beads and the Cruzan Rum Taste of Soulard-which also occurs on February 19 at local bars and restaurants. The Beggin' Pet Parade, on February 19, is your chance to see local pets dressed in Mardi Gras costumes. If you're looking to see dogs compete, swing by Soulard Market Plaza that day to check out the Barefoot Wine Wiener Dog Derby, which showcases local dachshunds competing to determine the fastest wiener dog in the area.

The last two nights of the festival, February 24 and 25, will feature some special events like the Mayor's Mardi Gras Ball. This black tie gala will feature cocktails, food, entertainment, and dancing. The final night of the festival will feature the Bud Light Grand Parade and the Bud Light Party Tent, offering an open bar and an all-you-can-eat buffet.
