When you're driving a new car, there may be a learning curve. You'll have to learn how each feature works. For instance, you'll need to find out how to adjust the windshield wipers the first time you drive your new vehicle in the rain.
One thing you'll learn pretty quickly is how to fuel your vehicle. When you pull up to the pump, you'll see multiple fuel options, with different numbers on them. Here at St. Charles Hyundai, we're here to help drivers near St. Charles and St. Louis, MO, fuel up the right way.
O'Fallon and Saint Peters, MO, drivers are asking, Does a Hyundai require premium gas? We're here to answer that question.
Premium Gas vs. Regular Gas
So, what do the numbers on the gas pump mean? Well, these numbers differentiate the types of gas based on how much octane there is in the fuel. The higher the number is, the more octane there is.
In simple terms, octane measures fuel stability. The more octane, the more stable the fuel will be. So, how does octane play into the different types of gas?
Premium gasoline refers to fuel with higher octane levels, such as 91. On the other hand, regular gasoline is usually the base option, with an 87-octane level. In the middle, you may find mid-grade fuel. The exact numbers may vary based on where you're fueling up. However, they'll generally be in the same vicinity.
For most Hyundai vehicles, it doesn't make much difference which type of gas you use. Premium gas may help vehicles with higher performance needs. The best way to find out if your specific Hyundai model needs premium gas is to check the owner's manual.

What Happens If I Use the Wrong Gas?
Generally, you can use any grade of gas to fill up your Hyundai. Whether you choose 87 or 91 octane, your vehicle should run just fine. While choosing premium gasoline won't hurt your Hyundai, it's not required.
The only requirement is to use unleaded gasoline. You'll want to avoid gasoline that has lead, gasohol, or methanol. In some gases, you can use gasohol, if it has less than 15% ethanol. However, you should not use any that fuel exceeds the 15% mark.
Using fuel that has any of the above things in it could lead to poor performance or engine damage. It's safest to use regular gasoline.
